A MARCH TO GATHER LUMBER

On this day, the regiment started early, marching from their camp near Indianola into the Texas prairie. Pvt. Newt Gorsuch, Company B, tells us they had no water. It is assumed one mission of the short expedition was to gather lumber to help build structures back at camp in Indianola. In the evening the regiment encountered the Confederate pickets and drove them in. They camped in a field near a farmer's house and enjoyed killing rabbits. The troops slept in the open air that night.

Period map showing a notional route the 16th Ohio may have taken on its march into the Texas prairie and back on February 5 and 6, 1864. The blue line very roughly reflects 15 miles.
