During this time the 16th Ohio waited in Algiers, Louisiana, camping in their tents near the railroad depot.
In a letter by Private Thomas Linn, Company B, to home, Linn states there is a large steamship docked at the wharf waiting to take troops to Texas. He does not at the time, however, know if the 16th Ohio will be included on that ship.
This 1873 period map shows Algiers, Louisiana, situated directly across the Mississippi River from New Orleans. The two red stars indicate spots where the 16th Ohio, and other troops, may have been loaded or unloaded on the trains of the New Orleans, Opelousas and Great Western Railroad. Research continues on identifying the precise location where troops would have boarded the trains and possibly where they would have been housed while camped in Algiers.
