INTO CAMP AT CARROLLTON, LOUISIANA

On August 16, 1863, the 16th Ohio debarked the boats which had carried them almost 400 miles from Vicksburg to Carrollton, Louisiana, and went into camp 1/2 mile east of the town. The regiment would enjoy a relaxing and luxurious camp for several weeks, until September 6. The troops would spend considerable time touring New Orleans before their next adventures began.

Cpl Theodore Wolbach, Company E, describes the day and their time in camp:

Disembarking the next morning we moved out on the famous shell road and pitched camp about a half mile from the village. The usual difficulties of keeping the men under proper restraint in the vicinity of large cities, was experienced by the officers here. Company commanders were pestered for passes to the city and some that failed to get them went anyhow. We drilled every day and were fully employed from morning till night.
