CAMP VIRGINIA, CUMBERLAND GAP - A SOLDIER'S LIFE CONTINUES

On June 27, the 16th Ohio, having been in camp near the citadel of Cumberland Gap, moved northwest to the Kentucky side of the gap. They set up camp near the State Road at the very foot of the Cumberland Mountains and The Gap. They named their new domicile Camp Virginia. Cpl. Wolbach:

On the 27th of June, the 16th crossed the mountain leisurely to the north side and established Camp Virginia. This was located a few minutes march west of the Kentucky road at the base of the mountain. Here among the rocks, in a grove of oaks, we pitched our tents. A road that run westward to Baptist Gap, five miles distant, bounded our camp on the north side. Beyond this lay a meadow and some comparatively level fields in the Yellow Creek valley. These were used for a drill ground, and here, daily, under the enervating rays of a scorching sun, we went through the monotonous evolutions of Hardie's tactics. A clear stream of cool water, that issued from a spring in a rocky gorge away up in the mountain side, flowed on the west side of camp. Sinks and cesspools were established and the rules that were to regulate them strictly enforced. Rations of a fair quality were issued in sufficient quantity. Berries in abundance were found in the neighborhood. With thee blessings and a clean camp in our favor, we should certainly enjoy good health and if my recollection is not in error we did enjoy it.

Cpl. William Warner Reid , Company C, briefly mentions:

Moved over into Kentucky side of the mountain, left of State Road, at the foot of the mountain. Camp was called Camp Virginia. The scenery from the top of the mountain is very beautiful. Our water was excellent, coming from a spring on the mountainside. The mountains abound with whortleberries and the valleys with blackberries. While camped here enjoyed excellent health.

The regiment spent the next four weeks enjoying a rather mundane but peaceful camp life at the western foot of Cumberland Gap amidst the glory of summer.
