along the whole line. we were to take the rebel works on the Bluffs. The signal for the charge was a volley of artilery. we formed in double column of Companies and at the given signal we started through a perfect storm of shot & shell from the enemy Batterys. we couuld protect ourselves pretty well while in the woods but on getting into the open ground they made sad havoc among our ranks. only part of our Division could get across the bayou & those that did went nearly to the knees in mud and water and were badly cut up as they advanced as the support failed to come up. we had to retire. the 16th Ohio lost 139 in prisoners and some over 50 killed and
