Web Author's Notes:
This is a view of Philippi, West Virginia, drawn in 1897, looking east from atop the hills where Union forces first approached and fired artillery on the town early in the morning on June 3, 1861. There are several notations on the sketch mentioning the position of troops at the battle. The Battle of Philippi, Virginia (later to become part of West Virginia), is considered to be the first land battle of the war. The 16th Ohio participated significantly in this battle.
