Web Author's Notes:
This sketch of Cumberland Gap is from the south side and shows Gen. Morgan's troops evacuating the stronghold and heading back through The Gap to the northeast and, ultimately, the safety of Ohio. The description from the Library of Congress reads:
Print shows abandoned tents scattered across the landscape, as the army passes through the Gap; long columns of troops and wagon trains are departing, some buildings are being burned. Possibly represents the sudden withdrawal of the Union army in advance of Confederate forces.
This sketch was likely made from an actual photograph which is presented
here.
