This photo was titled Chickasaw Bayou, Mississippi by the photographer William Redish Pywell. Although the published date on the photograph is February, 1864, it may have been taken at the time of or shortly after the battle in December, 1862.

The view is believed to be near Chickasaw Bayou looking east toward Chickasaw Bluffs or the Walnut Hills, where the Confederates were so perfectly positioned to destroy the Union attack force, mired in the mud and abatis below.
