Web Author's Notes:
Below are presented images of flags used by the 16th Ohio. These images come exclusively from the
Civil War 150 Ohio project sponsored by the Ohio Historical Society. Most of the Ohio Civil War regiments' flags were originally hung in the Ohio State House in Columbus for many years. In the 1960's it was finally realized these flags had been neglected and had almost deteriorated beyond recovery. In the 1960's, the Ohio Civil War Battleflag Project was begun under the guidance of the Ohio Adjutant General, Col. William B. Haines, with the goal of preserving what was left of the precious flags. Robert D. Needham became the official artist for the project and for three years painstakingly worked to paint accurate images of many of the flags at the same time these flags were being physically restored. The Ohio National Guard provided funding for the project. The images, below, include the original flag, as it exists today, and, where available, a painting of the flag by Robert Needham. This website applauds the Ohio Historical Society and Robert Needham for their work in preserving these relics.
