These are images of Adm. David Porter's fleet of gunboats moored along the bank of the Red River above the falls several miles above Alexandria.  It is likely this photo was taken when the boats were stranded above the falls by low water in April, and early May, 1864. It took the engineering of Col. Joseph Bailey, under Gen. Nathaniel Banks, to build dams across the river at Alexandria to raise the water level enough to allow the fleet to escape downstream.

The ironclad on the left is believed to be the U.S.S. Louisville.
