Map #1 - Second Bayou Teche Campaign
October 3 to November 17, 1863
Web Author's Notes:
This military map, though somewhat hard to read, shows the entire theatre of the Second Bayou Teche Campaign, executed by Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks in October and November, 1863, in his attempt to invade Texas from the east. The 16th Ohio entered the march from its base at Carrollton, Louisiana, staging at Berwick and advancing with the operation to Opelousas, Louisiana (upper left) before Banks decided the invasion was too difficult and withdrew most of his force back to New Orleans. From there he sent troops to Texas by way of ships on the Gulf of Mexico.

It should be noted that the map shows the route of General Banks during his first Bayou Teche campaign in April and May, 1863. The route followed in the second attempt, in which the 16th Ohio participated, was similar but, based on information from the 16th Ohio soldiers, may have differed in sight ways, staying closer to Bayou Teche than did Banks' route of the previous spring.
