Images of Big Black River Bridge
Web Author's Notes:
This is an image of military activity at Big Black River Station, Mississippi. It is cropped from the original, larger version, so that good detail can be seen. The train is heading west toward Vicksburg and looks to be loaded with many soldiers. Also note the wagon trains and mules, a no doubt common sight during these times. The photo is presented, here, to provide an excellent glimpse into what it really looked like in the Civil War and a specific view probably seen by the 16th Ohio soldiers as they pursued the Rebels toward Vicksburg on May 18, 1863.

Photo taken by William Redish Pywell and first published in February, 1864. The actual date of the photo is unknown but can be assumed to be between the surrender of Vicksburg, July 4, 1863 and the photo's publication date seven months later.

Photo available from Library of Congress.
