This map shows the positions of the Union troops and navy on the primary day of battle. Note DeCourcey's brigade shown in reserve near the original landing site at center right. Pvt. Frank Mason, 42nd Ohio, indicates that Gen. George Morgan did call up DeCourcey's troops in the heat of battle on January 11 and they were actively engaged in surrounding, attacking and storming the Rebel troops around the fort. Specific details on the actions of the 16th Ohio are not yet known.
