Web Author's Notes:
The flag shown, below, was carried by the 25th Virginia Infantry (Confederate) in early 1861 at the start of the war. According to the Museum of the Confederacy, this flag was captured at the Battle of Philippi in June, 1861, by Lieutenant William B. McCarty, Company B, of the 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The flag design is known as the First National Pattern of the Confederacy. Information on the capture of the flag is very sketchy and an inquiry has been made to the museum asking for more details.
