The 16th Ohio Volunteer Infantry played an integral part in the Battle of Philippi. Other than Ft. Sumter, which was mainly a bombardment, the Union attack and taking of Philippi, Virginia (later West Virginia), is considered to be the first land battle of the Civil War.
